Argentine Government Expects Labor Reform Approval in Senate

Ahead of the legislative process for the Labor Reform, the government anticipates securing a half-sanction in the Senate following changes implemented in recent hours. After the head of the 'La Libertad Avanza' bloc in the Senate, Patricia Bullrich, announced 28 modifications to the bill, officials in the ruling coalition are optimistic about the partial approval of the law that preoccupies President Javier Milei. 'According to yesterday's agreements, there should be no problems,' stated one of the executive branch's negotiators to the Argentine News Agency. Indeed, to gain the support of allied blocs, the libertarian administration removed the article that contemplated reducing the Income Tax and conceded to the CGT's demands to maintain the union treasury and mandatory contributions to business chambers with a cap of 0.5%, among other points. 'The changes were made to facilitate the law's passage, but the relevant and essential parts remain intact,' stated an official familiar with the bill's drafting. From 11:00, former Minister Patricia Bullrich will attempt to fulfill her promise and secure the half-sanction for the Labor Reform in the chamber, so the law can then move to the Chamber of Deputies. With this plan, the libertarian administration has decided to extend extraordinary sessions to Saturday, February 28, to meet deadlines and consolidate the law's passage before the Ordinary Sessions Opening scheduled for March 1. The changes have also garnered the support of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, whose spokeswoman, Laura Alonso, expressed her explicit support through her X account. 'I view with optimism the change expected in labor legislation. It is the possible change that must make clear who were the responsible parties for the historical failure of an old, corporate, and exhausted model,' she stated, adding: 'In the City, as Jorge Macri has been expressing, we are ready to support it.' The session will be supervised by Milei, who until then has a series of private meetings on his agenda and is expected to remain at the Olivos Presidential Residence. According to this agency, several representatives of the Executive will be present in the galleries of the National Congress, as occurred during the 2026 Budget debate. On this occasion, the Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, will be in attendance and follow the session's developments from the Senate Chamber. The negotiation team, composed of the Minister of the Interior, Diego Santilli; the Secretary of Strategic Affairs, Ignacio Devitt; and the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem, will also be present. Outside Congress, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), political parties, social organizations, and picketer groups will converge in a protest against the bill designed by the Ministers Federico Sturzenegger (Deregulation and State Transformation) and Luis Caputo (Economy).
